Business Travel Tips: Stay Healthy While Traveling

Client meetings, presentations and hiring changes are some of the many reasons work can require travel. Whatever the purpose, it’s important to keep your health in mind, especially when factors like stress level may be less in your control. Here are four tips for how to stay healthy while traveling.

1. Pack Snacks

You may be jet setting across the country (or world), but that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare healthy snacks. Small Ziploc bags with almonds, dried fruits or other nutritious munchies can help you maintain energy throughout the workday and create healthy business travel habits. You can always stack up on snacks when you’re settled, but so often the “I’m on vacation” mindset kicks in and junk food becomes harder to resist.

2. Hit the Fitness Center

Regardless of where you’re staying, most hotels have workout facilities that are typically never too crowded. Carve out 30 minutes of your day to enjoy a quick run or lifting session. Morning workouts are ideal, as you’ll release endorphins before work, setting a positive mood for the day.

3. Catch your ZZZs

In everything we do, sleep is essential. This is particularly true if you’re feeling jetlagged and need to get reoriented. If you’re used to relying on your biological alarm clock to wake up and get moving, more structured sleep plans can help develop healthy business travel habits.  Take a look at our Sleeping Tips on Business Trips Blog for ideas on how to ensure a good night’s rest.

4. Take it Easy

Let’s face it: work can be stressful at times. Business travel has its own stressors: whether it’s going through airport security or navigating a new city it can be hard to figure out how to stay healthy while traveling for business. Feel free to explore, sightsee and meet new people, but remember why you’re visiting. If work takes you to a desirable destination (somewhere you’d like to return for a leisure trip), make a list of everything you want to do. From this list, choose casual activities such as museums or park strolls for your business trip and save other plans such as nightclubs and concerts for vacations.
