If you’re new to Massachusetts, the rumors are true— Boston “happy hours”, as you may know them, are banned. While you may not snag reduced-priced suds by beating the night crowds, there are plenty of wallet-friendly food specials. Here are our five favorites in Boston and Cambridge.

Tapas for $5 or less? That’s right! In Boston’s South End neighborhood, discover Estragon’s “Tapas Blitz” menu. Every Monday through Thursday from 5 to 7pm, enjoy $1, $3 and $5 tapas. Delectable “happy hour” tapas at this Boston gem include Queso De Cabra (Warm Goat Cheese & Tomato on Toast), Calamares (Mini Fried Calamari Sandwich), and many others.

This Harvard Square hotspot impresses with their unbeatable specials. Every day, all food is half-priced from 5 to 7:30pm. That means $3 Mac & Cheese, $4.50 Garlic Chicken Curry or $5 French Dip, to name a few. Around in the afternoon? Try Grendal’s Den $5.95 Express Lunch with options such as the Chicken or Tofu Caesar Salad, Cheeseburger and more.

Whiskey’s

Stop by Whiskey’s on Boylston Street for their awesome app prices. Monday through Friday from 4 to 7pm munch on $3 bar bites such as New England Clam Chowder, Black Bean Dip, Onion Rings, Mozzarella Sticks and House Nachos. For a deal that sounds too good to be true, enjoy a 12″ cheese or pepperoni pizza for $1.99 from 11pm to 1:30am, seven nights a week.
