Flight Sickness: How to Soothe an Upset Stomach

No one likes an upset stomach, but flight sickness is its own beast. Luckily, we have a few tips that may help you feel better and avoid any embarrassing effects of motion sickness on the plane. Here are our top four tips for getting rid of flight sickness.

1. Find Comfort in your Carry On

Whether or not you’re prone to motion sickness on the plane or in general, preparing the essentials is always a good idea. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) prohibits liquid carryon items over 3.4 ounces, but don’t let that stop you from bringing Dramamine for dizziness or Ibuprofen for aches. If there’s a tea preference for soothing your stomach, consider bringing your own tea bags and request a cup of hot water during the flight.

2. Use Your Resources

If you have an upset stomach on the plane now and found these tips using the plane’s WiFi, maybe our carryon advice comes a little too late–so what can you do? Alert a flight attendant, and then continue reading these tips. The steward or stewardess will be delighted to assist in any way possible, whether it’s extra blankets, pillows or advice of their own. This isn’t their first flight sickness situation and won’t be their last!

3. Rest

Try to fall asleep. Easier said than done, right? Listen to mundane audiobooks or drowsy lullabies on your phone, then cozy up with blankets and try to emulate a dark, peaceful environment reminiscent of home. Even resting just 30 minutes will help pass time and ease flight sickness and anxiety.

4. Keep Distracted

“Just two hours left,” you think to yourself. If you can’t sleep, staying distracted is the second best course of action for conquering a long flight. Are movies available on the flight? Are you connected to the plane’s WiFi? Flipping through family photos on your phone is another great way to keep the mind busy as well as relive memories. If you’re traveling with a companion, consider light conversation or word games.
